About Men’s Leadership of Hawaii

Play above the storm

Men’s Leadership of Hawaii was founded in 1993 by Chris Kaminaka, Dwight Min, Alan Nagao, and Gerry Chang. The organization was created to serve the need of Men’s Leadership Seminar graduates to continue to apply the lessons of the experiences and create a difference in the community and contribute to personal & professional development.

Chris Kaminaka served as Men’s Leadership of Hawaiis first president and its founding board members created the bylaws for the organization. Men’s Leadership of Hawaii started as a small grassroots organization with membership in the 20s and has grown to as many as 78 members. Community service projects were originally funded through personal donations of the project leaders & volunteers.

As Men’s Leadership of Hawaii’s community projects became larger and more elaborate, fundraising projects were created and successfully raised money to finance members’ projects. As these efforts became more & more successful, its board members chose to restructure by establishing two independent yet cooperative organizations. MLH Hawaii Foundation was created as a 501 C-3 non-profit organization to manage the funds raised volunteer efforts. Men’s Leadership of Hawaii was formally established as a 501 C-7 non-profit organization to continue the mission & vision of creating a difference in the community and for its members.

Activities and benefits have evolved through the years for Men’s Leadership of Hawaii members along with the breadth & scope of projects such as the Children’s Discovery Center, Kalaupapa Molokai construction restoration, Camp Anuenue for the American Cancer Society & Camp Erdmen for the YMCA to name a few. Regularly scheduled social events for members & supporters have included the Lanikai Thank You BBQ, SoftBall Picnic, & the Year End Gala. Men’s Leadership of Hawaii holds regularly scheduled General Membership meetings to keep our members informed & also to welcome back new Men’s Leadership Seminar Graduates upon their return.

For the past 19 years Men’s Leadership of Hawaii continues to be an environment where “Great Leaders Play Here” by contributing to society through its community service projects and managing an organization in a synergy that promotes personal and professional development.
